Following her collaborations with local musicians on Deep Roots, Tall Trees: A Corby Song Cycle for The Core’s second birthday celebration, Jungr’s new show looks back on her journey from her own roots in the North West of England, to international cult status as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of song.

The tour coincides with the release of Stockport to Memphis, the album. Jungr has never been to Memphis but as a teenage girl in 1960s Stockport, she nurtured a longing for what it represented: the sweet soul music she danced to in clubs at night, and the sense of a bigger, more beautiful world than the northern industrial town she couldn’t wait to leave. As well as performing songs from the album such as River by Joni Mitchell and Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, Barb will be singing five new original tracks.

Jungr has a special affinity with Corby and has played at The Core on numerous occasions. Creative Director Chris Sudworth said, ‘Barb is always well received by our audiences. Whether she is giving an incredible interpretation of Bob Dylan, or collaborating with our local artists and singers, she just fits right in, in our industrial town.’

The long-awaited film of David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas opens The Core’s film programme for May with an exhilarating journey across the centuries and into the future, full of big ideas and multiple roles for actors including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent. Shown on Thursday 2 May at 11am, Cloud Atlas will be this month’s Re:View Film and Book Club screening, with an opportunity to discuss the novel for half an hour before the screening, followed by an appraisal of the film afterwards.

Stephen Soderbergh’s farewell to cinema comes to Corby on Friday 3 May at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Side Effects is a tense, noirish psychological thriller starring Rooney Mara as a disturbed woman who is prescribed an experimental drug by her psychiatrist (Jude Law). Oz The Great And Powerful (Saturday 4 May at 10.30am and Monday 6 May at 2.30pm) stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams are the three witches who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting, in Sam Raimi’s magnificent Wizard Of Oz prequel.

Robot & Frank stars Frank Langella is a lonely retired jewel thief whose son sends him a robot butler to keep him company. But Frank soon discovers that the robot makes an ideal partner in crime as he slips back into his old ways. Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler and Peter Sarsgaard also star in this inspired, heartwarming, sci-fi comedy, screening on Tuesday 7 May at 11am, 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Miranda Hart’s hilarious movie debut, 12 In A Box can be seen on Thursday 9 May at 11am. Deaths, intrigue, kidnapping, farce and confusion follow when a group of old school friends attempt to stay inside a country mansion for four days in an attempt to fulfil the conditions of an inheritance.

Winner of Best Film at The British Independent Film Awards 2012, coming-of-age drama Broken is shown on Friday 10 May at 7.30pm. Newcomer Eloise Laurence is Skunk, a young girl whose life changes when her friend is brutally attacked, with strong performances from Tim Roth as Skunk’s father, Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear. In Song For Marion (Monday 13 May at 11am, Tuesday 14 May at 2.30pm and 7.30pm), Terence Stamp is a shy, grumpy pensioner who is talked into joining the choir attended by his late wife (Vanessa Redgrave). Gemma Arterton is the charismatic young music teacher in charge in this hilarious, life-affirming journey of musical self-discovery. There will be a Big Scream! screening of the film, solely for parents and babies under one year old, at 11am on Tuesday 14 May, when noise is no concern and babies go free.

Verdi’s towering tragedy Rigoletto is transposed to 1960s Las Vegas on Monday 20 May at 11am and Saturday 25 May at 7.30pm, with a live recording from the New York Metropolitan Opera. The womanising Duke of Mantua, the tragic, hunchbacked Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter, Gilda, are brought into the glitzy world of Dean, Sammy and Frank. It’s over to present-day New York on Tuesday 21 May at 11am and 2.30pm for smart, slick thriller Arbitrage. A New York hedge fund magnate finds himself caught in a web of lies and betrayal when he crashes his car on a liaison with his mistress. Richard Gere gives a career-best performance, with Susan Sarandon as his loving wife and Tim Roth as the detective determined to bring him to justice.

Another intelligent thriller full of stylish twists and turns, Danny Boyle’s long-anticipated Trance screens on Tuesday 21 May at 7.30pm. Desperate to pay off his gambling debts, James McAvoy’s young art auctioneer falls in with gangster Franck (Vincent Cassel) in a daring bid to steal a Goya painting.

The film screenings take place in The Core’s main Theatre auditorium, offering comfortable seats and benefiting from state of the art digital sound and projection equipment. How to join the scheme and claim your tickets?

Call the Ticket Office on 01536 470 470. You’ll be asked for a few details including your contact address, phone number, email address and, of course, your date of birth. You’ll then be registered as a member of the Real Discounts Scheme. Alternatively you can email comments@thecorecorby.com and provide these details.

You can then make your ticket request direct with the Ticket Office (please note that you’ll only be able to book 1 ticket per registered customer, unless the offer is a two for one, so if you want to come with friends, make sure they’ve signed up to be part of the Real Discounts Scheme too).

You’ll receive confirmation of your booking via email and the ticket will be available for collection on the night of the show. This must be collected no later than 30 minutes before the performance or it will be released for re-sale. Using multiple layers of scrolling film and Motionhouse’s highly physical dance style, Broken creates an intriguing computer game-esque world of tunnels and burrows, shifting perspectives and see-sawing slopes and platforms. From hanging in suspense to diving for support, the dancers negotiate the cracks and craters of this world of illusions where nothing is quite as it seems.

We will be holding auditions on Monday 8 July to find a new group of performers that will become the next Corby Young Dancers company, starting in September 2013. No previous experience is necessary, but those who are successful will be expected to commit to both terms of the programme.

Term One (Sep – Nov 2013) Work with leading dance professionals to develop your stamina, strength, choreographic skills and technical ability. The group will perform a short piece at November’s Corby Youth Arts Slam.

Term Two (Feb – Apr 2014) A dynamic and successful guest choreographer will lead the group in the creation of an original dance production, performed in The Theatre at The Core in April 2014.

Deep Roots Tall Trees Choir

Following on from its debut performance last year, Deep Roots  Tall Trees Choir is looking for new members.
